Geo check ins for businesses

Can anyone shed some light on how a business can do check-ins within Google, after completing services at a location, in an effort to improve local business listing results?

I have seen it offered through seo agency forms, etc that apparently do it for a fee, but I am looking for DIY instructions to accomplish this task.
