SEO Forum Quick Guide

I did my best to make this website intuitive and really easy to use. However, coming from much more complex forum softwares, some features may not be understood the way, they were intended to be, so here is a brief summary on how SEO Forum works and its core features.

Threads and Replies

All forum posts are organised as threads and corresponding replies. It's format used over all popular forum softwares. There is no fundamental difference to this well known concept.

Discussions and Questions

SEO Forum allows you to choose whether your thread should be question or discussion type. If you choose question, you will be able to accept an answer. Please, make sure you read through all replies in your thread and check twice if it really worked before accepting an answer.

Starting discussion

If you're creating new thread, don't use general subjects as following:

  • How to optimize my website?
  • SEO vs. SEM
  • Wordpress SEO

Describe your question or subject you want to discuss briefly but accordingly. Make sure other users will understand what is inside your thread without clicking on it. If they are interested, they will read it and eventually post a reply. No need to force them to do so.

For example, Need help with Wordpress SEO! isn't quiet descriptive. Accurately written subject would be: Wordpress blog has 0 indexed pages after 30 days. This way, users clearly understand what's your problem and they may jump in and help you quickly.

There are subject conventions reserved for spammers and link hunters. Typically, it looks like #1 SEO Company in Bangalore or so. Please, stay away from these, so we can track spammers down and treat them specially.

Categories

Categories replace what other softwares often call forums. These are one level above threads. Think of category as a channel where your thread is broadcasted. To fix common issue of uncertainity and related categories, you may add up to 3 categories to your thread.

The content of the forum is 100% user contributed, and so are the categories themselves. When creating new thread, you can use any of the existing categories, or you can create a custom one, if it doesn't already exist. Please, note that your newly created category may not get popular and therefore receive less exposure from users browsing forum content using categories.

Upvotes

If you like a thread or a particular reply, you can upvote it. By upvoting content, you are basically saying that it has helped you, you found it useful and it might be useful to others. Do not upvote posts just because you agree with it.

Thread subscriptions

If you spot an interesting thread, you can subscribe to it. Once subscribed to a thread, you will receive notifications every time the thread gets updated. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Following categories

If you are interested in particular category, you can follow it. You can then use Followed Categories aggregate to see only threads from categories you are following.

Bookmarking

Bookmarking feature has been added after major project rewrite in 2018. Like others requested, it's good way to save valuable posts for later.

Reporting posts

Spam has been strong at SEO forum since it's early days. Sometimes I didn't get a chance to visit forum for day or two and the amount of spam posted in such timespan was unbelievable sometimes. Now, there is a report post feature, so I kindly ask you to use it in obvious cases, but don't report posts you don't like. Report != Downvote.

User profiles

Each user has their public profile available for every one. There is activity feed, list of replies and threads, and additional filters (questions, discussions, answers).

You can also set up your location and Bio column, visible in the sidebard of your profile page. These are not required.
