Page Not Indexed - Delete or Redirect?

by @jonduv (604), 3 weeks ago

Hi there,

I have an old article that has never been indexed on Google. My thought was to remove any links pointing to the article, then delete. Note: There are no backlinks to this page. Would this be the best way to approach this, or should I redirect it to a relevant page? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If there are no links, no traffic and no purpose, I'd remove the page.

Redirect if the page has backlinks, traffic, or SEO value. There's a better or updated version of the page and the content is merged into another page. Delete if the page has no SEO value (no traffic, backlinks, or relevance). There’s no suitable replacement or redirect target. You want to clean up low-quality URLs (thin blog posts, test pages, etc.)

Hi, I recommend linking that page with some of those pages that are getting organic traffic, so that the authority can pass, and then try to request indexing in Google Search Console. If it's still not indexed, then delete

Hi @yapyup,

Ya, that's what I did. I removed any links in the site pointing to the page and added links to the page with value. Waited a week, then removed the page.

Would it be best to 410 it or simply just let it 404 out? Thanks

Yes you can If the page has no value or traffic, delete it. But If it has SEO potential or backlinks, redirect it to a relevant page to retain authority.
