URL Change for Better Site Structure

by @jonduv (611), 3 weeks ago

Hello,

First of all, I would like to say thank you for this forum and for providing advice on SEO. Very helpful.

I have a question related to site structure. Our website has been around for a very long time, and our important pages/posts for services are NOT organized in a parent/child format (i.e, event-services/event1, event-services/event2, airport-services/airport1, airport-services/airport2, etc.). Most of our service pages/posts are listed as top-level URLS with not much organization. Our way of organizing has always been through internal linking to show which of our pages/posts are most important and direct users that way.

With this said, our site does pretty well, but I'm wondering if we may be leaving an opportunity on the table. If we were to reorganize the site more in a parent/child format, this would allow us to add breadcrumbs to our pages, which I feel would provide a better user experience (navigation-wise). However, to do this, I would have to implement a significant number of 301 redirects. I would also have to change/simplify some of the natural and unique URLs that contain targeted key phrases (which I think have benefited us).

MY QUESTION FOR DISCUSSION: Do you feel the "juice would be worth" the squeeze to reorganize this way? Our site is approximately 140 pages/posts, with about 50% being selling pages/posts. Note: Some posts are sub-services that currently do pretty well. If I were to reorganize as mentioned above, these would need to be converted to pages. Implementing these changes could be ideal moving forward and long term.

Just looking for some other opinions on this before I ultimately make a decision. Any input anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would suggest to use custom menu/ child menu without changing URLs. This will improve the UX and crawl-ability both.

Okay, that sounds like a good plan. Thanks so much.

Hey @jonduv, just wanted to chime in with my thoughts. If your current URLs are already performing well, changing them could risk losing some of that SEO value, even with proper 301 redirects. Search engines care more about clear internal linking and structure than the actual URL format. You can still add breadcrumbs and improve navigation through schema markup and menus without needing to restructure URLs. That might be a safer approach while still enhancing the user experience.
