Publisher SEO question

Hey, I work for a news website and we have a couple of articles that rank for really good keywords, but they keep on dropping ranks on Google. I was wondering if anyone knows whether updating articles like these often can be penalised by Google for some reason? Can't seem to find the answer on Google, any help would be greatly appreciated :)
