Internal tracking parameters / duplicate content

by @benjo (117), 3 years ago

Hi all

I want to be able to track internal clicks and user paths throughout my site and the easiest and most controllable way of doing that (for me) is to add silent parameters to the link URLs which I can then report on. For instance:

Linked from the menu: http://mysite.com/mypage.htm?t=Menu

Linked from the homepage: http://mysite.com/mypage.htm?t=Home

The parameters would not affect page content.

It was once thought that Google will see each iteration as its own page and trigger duplicate content issues - is that still the same in 2021? Is this OK to do or could it affect my rankings negatively?

Thanks in advance

Ben

I would set all parameter URLs to index and set the canonicals.
