I added 3 words on different pages and site entirely de-ranked

by @flav (136), 21 hours ago

Hello,

On 3 different pages, I added three words, and on one page, I rewrote the entire text. The next day, those 4 pages were de-ranked, and the day after, my entire website was affected—even pages that were in the top 10 and that I hadn't modified at all were also de-ranked.

In Google Search Console, I don’t see any penalties, so now I’m wondering what to do.

Should I wait? It’s been a week, and I still haven’t recovered my rankings. Should I wait one, two, or even three months? And will I recover my rankings if I don’t touch anything?

Or should I revert the modified pages to how they were before the changes? If I do, will I get my previous rankings back within 24 to 48 hours?

Has anyone experienced something like this before?

Thanks.

This is interesting. I don't think adding 3 words is a change significant about to change your content so dramatically that Google would dump you from their rankings. The chances are it happened because of algorithm update and the two events somehow coincided.

The rewritten page could be a different story and I'd start there. Do you still have old version of it somewhere? If so, try to put it back and let's see what happens in a week or so. There is no set time like 48 hours for Google to update their rankings. Depends on how popular your site is and how often Google bot visits.

Anyway, I'd start with the rewritten page reverting the changes to 100% old content and see what happens. If it helps, it's probably worth a try to remove those 3 words from 3 remaining pages.

Btw. how much content do the 3 pages have? Very little? It's the only scenario I can think of that would make sense.

Thank you for detailed reply. Before you replied I did exactly what you mentioned, I reverted the page that I had re-written entirely to a version that I was not penalised with. Overnight nothing happened but let's wait and see. By the way this page was written by ai and I think google has an algorithm that penalises that ... which I think is the reason why all my pages de-ranked. I hope it won't take months to revert see that my entire site was affected.

How about I now add more content to the page that I reverted it to, can it boost how fast it will update if I add new content to it ?

Thank you,
