Homepage ranking higher than internal page

I've got a travel web directory and I have for example a post:

"Where to stay in Madrid"

Instead of google showing the internal page: www.mysite.com/where-to-stay-in-madrid it shows www.mysite.com

So I am assuming that the SEO work on the homepage focuses too much on "where to stay"? If that is the case then how do I get the internal page to get higher results without negatively affecting the homepage rank and what keywords do I focus on for the homepage?
