.COM vs .CC domain names for SEO

I know .COM domains are the most SEO friendly on internet. However, if I only find a domain with .CC, can I still rank on Google's search results?
I read somewhere that .CC is widely used in spam and malware sites, but there are popular websites that have .CC, like: arduino.cc
Question: Should I really go for a .COM domain name? (requires changing the brand name) or .CC is fine?

Yes, you can rank with any domain. As long as your website and content do perform well, it's all fine. However, you may see lower CTR, as most people don't know exotic extensions and they are used to .com. Also, expect some traffic leaking to the .com.
