category pages v pages

by @happyman92 (116), 2 years ago

I am working on a site at the moment and i want to combine two pages and then delete one page but not sure if this would be a good idea.

The two pages are

https://www.in2town.co.uk/skegness-news/

which is a catogory page. It is set out to have all the articles about news on there under the category news, and then to have some other sections on there. I am going for the keyword skegness news

I have another page

https://www.in2town.co.uk/skegness-lifestyle-magazine/

which the keywords are skegness magazine and skegness lifestyle magazine. i am currently playing around with the two pages.

I would like to know if it would be a good idea to combine them both and then keep the category page and delete the lifestyle page. and if it would be a good idea, what is the best way to do it. i use Yoast.

Not an easy question. For a good answer somebody has to reserve at least an hour. Depends of many factors.

  1. Both URLs only have backlinks from threads (namely from this thread on SF and one from WarriorForum). This means, URL rating is roughly equal = doesn't matter which one you keep and which one you merge&remove.

  2. Check your analytics. If you find one of the categories (URLs) performing significantly better, therefor it receives more traffic from search, referral traffic, ... keep that one. The rule of thumb here is, you want to keep the bigger, more used page and merge smaller, less significant.

  3. Why would you merge two distinct category pages with no semantic overlap in the first place? Doesn't make sense to me.

Side note: something seems broken - from time to time a page doesn't load for me (randomly).

@ms point 1 I really would advice you to compare the bounce rate of the two pages too. With UX in mind the dwell tima is another factor to check.

Point 3 Agree, optimize both for different keywords. Link from the smaller to the bigger page with the keyword you want to optimize.

Or if you want to make the smaller more important vice versa
