Adding alt text to SVGs for text indexing

The site I'm currently working on has many scalable vector graphics, and the graphics contain the bulk of the site's written content. Google seemingly can't index most of this content. Would replicating the in-graphic written content in the SVGs' alt text fields allow Google to crawl and index it properly?
